Learn How to Report – Daylite Reporting Fundamentals Book

February 13, 2009 on 3:21 pm | Ryan

One of our Partners, Eric O’Connell, has written a great book about creating reports in Daylite. His book covers a range of basic and advanced topics, that can be applied to developing your own customized reports – to maximize the benefit of using Daylite.

The report engine is the same in Billings, so readers can apply what they learn to

I also wanted to take this opportunity to congratulate Eric on his Master Partner status – way to go! We now have six Master Partners on our roster, with that list continuing to grow.

Eric’s book features:

  • Report and Page Layout tutorials walk you through creating report documents
  • The different layout elements are discussed
  • The data model as made available to the report engine is discussed, and each primary Daylite object (contacts, organizations, projects, opportunities and groups) are diagrammed to illustrate which data is available and where it can be found
  • The different types of page layout formats are discussed
  • The last two chapters discuss F-Script and how it can be used to acquire and format data

Happy reading!

Daylite Touch – MacWorld Best of Show!

January 8, 2009 on 1:37 am | AJ

So I’m extremely proud of the fact that we won a Macworld Best of Show award for Daylite Touch.

For many years, we’ve dreamed of a true mobile companion for Daylite, but as we looked at the various phone SDK’s out there (Palm, RIM and Windows Mobile), we would cringe at the thought of having to develop for those platforms. We just couldn’t bring ourselves to do it.

Then came Steve Jobs’ 2007 Macworld Keynote (one of his best) and the introduction of the iPhone.
Wow! What a game changer.

I remember, we were making final booth preparations and I had to crouch down to see the screen in the Apple booth (on which the keynote was being broadcasted on). I distinctly remember thinking to myself “this is it, this is the device we’ve been waiting for!”.

We had to patiently wait for the device to ship and then for the SDK.
The wait was tortuous.

Then on March 6th, 2008, one of our engineers luckily went to the Apple Developer site just as Apple posted the link for the new SDK. He downloaded it immediately. Shortly thereafter, the site got so busy you couldn’t even get to the page. We had the SDK and now it was time to check it out.

We were so excited, we even forgot about lunch that day as we explored the SDK to see what we could and couldn’t do. That was the very day Daylite Touch development began.

By the time it ships, Daylite Touch will have been in development for almost a full year with many engineers working on it, working on Daylite and working on the upcoming Daylite Server. It’s been a long road, but it will be worth it.

I can’t wait for you to have it.

Until next time…

Billings 3 Sale Continues!

December 1, 2008 on 3:49 pm | Ryan

With the great success of our Billings 3 “Give Main Street a Break” sale, and with no reprieve in the economy and credit markets, we’ve decided to extend the special pricing until January 31st, 2009.

Billings 3 will continue to sell for US $39.95 instead of $59.95, and the upgrade will still be available to existing Billings 2.x users for US $25 compared with $35.

Happy billing!

Daylite is like Origami

November 27, 2008 on 4:22 pm | Ryan

Marni “The MacAngel” Melrose makes a Guest Appearance on the Mac Lawyer’s Blog

Marni Melrose, one of our Master Certified Partners, was recently featured as a guest writer on The Mac Lawyer’s blog.

In Marni’s post she writes about her growing career as a Daylite “teacher”, and how she’s been able to help many people manage and grow business using Daylite as the platform for her methodology.

She compares Daylite to Origami:

“What I do know is that Daylite is daunting for some folks, and I completely understand. Think of a blank piece of paper. What do you do with it? Well, it depends who you give it to. If you give it to most people they won’t know what to do with it, they will “draw a blank”. If you give it to someone who makes Origami, you are going to get a beautiful piece of art back.”

Of course the article hones in on the law community, as she discusses her principle of using Daylite as a “steel trap” – to encompass all aspects of business, as well as personal stuff. Links to reviews from past clients in the law industry are provided, allowing potential new clients to look at feedback before soliciting her services. Marni also posts a link to a new “Daylite in the Law Office” webinar, giving viewers insight to the many benefits she offers.

Not everyone requires help from a Marketcircle Partner when getting started, but it is recommended for larger installs that want to formalize some processes and want to get the most out of Daylite. Daylite is a veritable goldmine and one of our certified partners can help you dig out some real nuggets – even as a single user.

MYOB AccountEdge Connector, Daylite 3.8 and Delivery 1.2 Released

November 18, 2008 on 1:34 am | AJ

We have some important releases for you today.

First – The new Daylite MYOB AccountEdge Connector. We’ve been getting requests for this for many many years, but in order to pull it off, we needed some changes in MYOB. Well, happily, the Mac AccountEdge engineering team pulled it off in Version 9 (U.S. version only for now). The connector is sold separately for U.S. $99.99 per seat and offers two time & cost saving efficiencies well worth the money. We are super excited about this connector and many of our customers will be too. Learn more here.

Second – Daylite 3.8. We’ve made some big changes in the reminders area of the application. Mostly for better iCal (Sync Services) integration. We originally thought that we could transform our reminders to the kind iCal supports and back, but that proved to be too difficult to get right, so we changed our reminder system to match theirs. On top of that, you can do cool things like set automatic reminders on incoming delegation or meetings.

Further, in preparation for Daylite Touch, we consolidated task statuses and priorities and added the notion of “inbox” and “someday”. We have a whole bunch of other fixes as well.

Keep in mind that you’ll have to recreate offline databases and sync services will do a reset (or refresh) sync. Download it from here (if you are in a multi-user environment, check with your administrator before installing).

Third – Daylite Delivery 1.2. This is a maintenance release of Delivery that works with Daylite 3.8. Download it here.

That’s it for now. We’ll have more news for you soon.

Until next time…

Apple going after the Enterprise – Not!

November 14, 2008 on 4:56 pm | AJ

As some of you know, I’ve been pretty vocal about how Apple shouldn’t cater to the Enterprise. But when Apple decided to add a whole bunch of Enterprise friendly feature in iPhone OS 2, I decided to stay quiet on the topic (and we’ve been busy) – even though I still thought they shouldn’t go for the Enterprise.

Now Al Shipp (SVP of Enterprise Sales) is retiring from Apple and he is not be replaced. This is not bad, this is good actually.

Apple doesn’t need a replacement for Al, because users, who want Apple product and most times are willing to pay for them out of their own pocket, are making Enterprise IT conform – rather than the other way around.

People lament that Apple has always struggled to get into the Enterprise, but the fact is, I don’t think they want to go there (perhaps it’s low hanging fruit for resellers). Apple is not an Enterprise company and it shouldn’t be. Apple is an innovator, a transformer, a fast mover. The Enterprise on the other hand (at least the IT part) is a laggard, a dinosaur.

Macworld’s John Welch says it best and John Gruber highlights:

“Here’s the simple truth: Enterprise hates surprises. It’s not what they want. Enterprise wants predictability. They want to know when, what, how much, and that it will be all new and cool, yet change nothing. (Yes that’s contradictory. Have you ever tried to use “Enterprise Software?” Winning usability awards is so not happening there.) And they want to know everything in detail a year ahead of time. Can anyone seriously imagine how long Apple would survive under that model? Right, not long.”

Let’s just remember, let Microsoft take the Enterprise, let Apple take the rest of the World.

Humanity needs innovation and thankfully Apple is happy to comply.

Until next time…

Switching Made Easy!

November 12, 2008 on 2:01 pm | Ryan

With more people coming to Daylite from ACT! than any other application, we decided we needed to step up our efforts in gaining PC switchers – after all, about 50% of our new users have migrated from the PC world.

We’ve created a “switcher pagededicated to educating and assisting PC users in making the move to an all Mac office.

The page offers resources to new Mac users to help them get up to speed, as well as the details about how their ACT! business data can be easily seamlessly imported into Daylite. You’ll have a chance to read success stories from companies that have made the switch from PC-based offices using ACT!, to an all Mac office running Daylite. We’ve even thrown in a few of our favourite Apple commercials to lighten things up.

Two new training videos were in order; one giving new users a General Daylite Overview, and another showing you how your ACT! data will look in Daylite.

If you haven’t yet – it’s time to make the switch.
