Some help for Now customers

March 22, 2010 on 3:52 pm | AJ

We got a sad bit of news today. Now Software, makers of Now Contact and Now Up to Date and the recent Now X, has folded. Read the full letter here.

I know the people at Now Software worked hard to make Now X a success, so this probably wasn’t an easy decision for them. Making this kind of software is not easy.

As a Now user, you must be worried about the path forward. Worry not – we can help. For a long time now, Daylite has included a Now Contact and Now Up to Date data import tool. You can use this tool to migrate all your data over to Daylite.

Our team of partners worldwide can help you migrate your data and teach you how to take advantage of some of the special features in Daylite – including how to leverage your iPhone with Daylite Touch and emails with DMI.

Let us know how we can help or if you have any questions, contact our customer service team.

UPDATE: We are working on a page to help NUDC users understand the differences with Daylite and the migration/evaluation process.

UPDATE2: We’ve posted a special page for Now users here.

Until next time…

1st Annual Partner Conference Sells Out!

September 16, 2009 on 10:48 am | Ryan

Our first annual Partners conference has just sold out!

The Partners conference should prove to be an amazing event – for both ourselves and our network of partners from across the globe.

The conference will be a great opportunity for us to meet our partners face-to-face – plenty of new ones and many familiar. It will also allow our partners to network with each other, to share tips, tricks, and insight – a great thing for everyone.

Of course, I’d be lying if I said it wouldn’t also be a great opportunity (no pun intended) for everyone to relax and enjoy some time away from the office, with Niagara Falls serving as our new cubicles.

LgoConsulting has announced the availability of MerlinDaylite Link, a tool that allows information to be shared between Merlin and Daylite.

The MerlinDaylite-Link allows information to be shared between the two applications. This gives you access to the power of Merlin for professional project management to manage and plan a project, whilst sharing the outcome with Daylite’s team and business management tools. If you use Daylite Touch, you can then use this data on your iPhone.

For more information about the MerlinDaylite-Link, follow this link .

Daylite 3.9.2 Released

May 13, 2009 on 1:09 pm | Ryan

We’ve released Daylite 3.9.2 which includes some important improvements:

  • Improved connection handling for shared databases
  • Improved offline synchronization to better handle certain edge cases
  • Improved offline synchronization reminder to no longer block DMI when it is up

We tweaked the connection protocol to be more robust, so you’ll need to make sure that all computers are running 3.9.2 (including your offlines). If you use Daylite Delivery, you’ll need version 1.6 which we also released today to accommodate the protocol change.

Daylite version 3.9.2 is a free update for existing (and trial) users, and is available for download here.

You can check out the release notes for more information.

Wow – Daylite Touch reception has been fantastic!

April 2, 2009 on 4:38 pm | AJ

It seems like most people are appreciating Daylite Touch and Daylite 3.9 in a big way. Even with Sample data in Daylite Touch and a 30 day trial, we’ve broken daily unit sales records in the past couple of days. Something I didn’t expect considering we have a trial period. Thank-you!

People have been eager to try 3.9 or migrate to it and the new Daylite Server has caused confusion for some users, so let me take this opportunity to clear things up.

  1. If you want to use Daylite Touch, or you want to share a database with multiple users/computers, you *must* install Daylite Server and, for existing users, you *must* migrate using Daylite Server. Daylite Server should only be installed on one and only one computer.
  2. Then install Daylite 3.9 and in a shared database environments, install Daylite 3.9 on your other computers as well.

If you are a single user and you do not plan to use or try Daylite Touch and/or you do not share your database on multiple computers, then install Daylite 3.9 only.

If you’ve migrated your database using Daylite 3.9 instead of using Daylite Server, then you need move your database to Daylite Server. Follow these steps.

We are going to change a few things around in order to reflect this order better. Unfortunately, places like the Apple Downloads page are linking directly to the Daylite 3.9 disk image which is causing some of the confusion. We are looking to rectify that as well.

A blog is not the best support medium, so I’m going to close the comments. Please email support or visit the forums – we have two separate teams manning these areas. Due to the volume (mostly because of this confusion), support response is a bit slow right now, but we will get to you!

Until next time…

Daylite Touch and Daylite 3.9 Available Now!

March 30, 2009 on 11:01 pm | AJ

I’ve been waiting for this day for a long time. Back on March 6th, 2008, when we began Daylite Touch development, we didn’t realize that we would end up with Daylite on top of a different, more robust database stack. We didn’t realize that we would have a whole new offline sync architecture, a new server, and a new dedicated Over The Air sync system, all working in unison to give us a fantastic small business solution.

Yet this is exactly what we have today. It’s been a long, hard road, but I can assure you that the new Daylite “solution” is much better. We can now truly say that the Apple ecosystem has one of the best small business (1-50) environments out there. iPhone, MacBook, iMac, Mac Pro, Xserve, iPod – connected or disconnected – no matter where you are, you can propel your small business forward in these incredibly tumultuous yet markedly opportune times.

Our vision was to build a system that leveraged your idle time – those times when you’re waiting for something, have nothing to do, and a laptop is inappropriate. We knew those time spans would be short and you’d want to be in and out of the app quickly. I think we’ve accomplished our product vision, gone further and built a great system.

Along the way we ran into some pretty difficult challenges. One of Daylite’s key differentiators is the awesome “linking” between the objects in the productivity pyramid within a multi-user environment. This feature gives people a whole lot of context that other apps simply can’t match and it presents some interesting technical challenges. For example, how do you bring over relevant data to a mobile device from a 5 GB or larger shared database? Or how do you manage synchronizing multiple devices at the same time for different users? And many other intricacies.

Yet another kind of challenge was taking Daylite’s core functionality and figuring out how to implement all of that on a small screen with touch input (considering that a comfortable touch point is at least 44 pixels). When you play around with Daylite Touch, it will seem just right, yet I can assure you that it took many many hours of debates, discussions, experiments, and redo to get there.

When you’re in bed or in a hotel lobby in Thailand and you can review open projects, make and delegate tasks, setup meetings with team members, and plan your next couple of days, all from your phone, you realize that the long road was worth it. It was worth redoing whole sections of the app, it was worth stopping development for 4 weeks to figure out how tasks should really work, it was worth figuring out how to use multi-touch to drag-create appointments and meetings, it was worth weeks of optimization work so it launches in under 7 seconds for relatively large data sets, it was worth ripping out the database engine and putting in a new one so initial setup is 6 times faster, it was worth redoing the Daylite offline sync mechanism so it plays nicely with TouchSync, and it was worth cutting some features so we can ship it today.

The entire Marketcircle team has worked incredibly hard to bring us to this day, and I’m very proud of them.

So without further ado, check out our updated Daylite Touch page and download Daylite 3.9 (existing users, allocate some time for migration).

We’ve included sample data in Daylite Touch so you can try it out at no cost. And when you’re ready to use your real data, simply add a license to Daylite Server and start syncing with your device. You’ll see a whole new world of possibilities open up.

Until next time…
AJ
