Daylite & Daylite Server 3.13

December 15, 2010 on 10:35 am | Ryan

Along with the release of Daylite Touch for iPad today, we’re releasing Daylite and Daylite Server 3.13.

The main reason for this release is the change to the Daylite Touch licensing structure.

Previously, if a user had an iPhone and an iPod touch (or iPad), they’d require 2 licenses to be able to sync both devices with their Daylite database.

When we developed the licensing structure for Daylite Touch, the iPad wasn’t even a rumour. At this time, most Apple customers (and our customers) only used one iOS device – an iPhone OR an iPod touch, as the two products are almost identical.

Sure people had an iPod touch for their car stereo, but in almost all cases, people were accessing Daylite from only one iOS device.

This has since changed, as many people (including us) use both an iPhone AND an iPad on a regular basis.

For the release of Daylite Touch 1.6, which adds native iPad support a user needs only one license of Daylite Touch to support all of their iOS devices. A user will be able to run Daylite Touch from their iPhone, iPod touch, and iPad with only one license.

To take advantage of the changes, please make sure you download the latest version of Daylite and Daylite Server (3.13) from here, and download Daylite Touch 1.6 on your iOS device from the App Store directly on your device, or from iTunes on your Mac.

You can read the release notes here.

We want to encourage the use of Daylite Touch, and that means being able to use it from any number of devices.

Happy Holidays!

- Ryan

Billings Pro 1.0 Released!

August 30, 2010 on 7:35 am | AJ

I’m extremely proud to announce that Billings Pro is now available for you to try and buy.

When we set out to build Billings Pro, we wanted to do something different. We wanted to build a system that gave people a fully native multi-user app, yet provided them the flexibility of moving anywhere, without worrying about connectivity.

There is a paradox happening. The world is getting more connected, but the quality of these connections is dropping. It used to be that if you had a network connection (wired), you knew it was a solid connection, nowadays not so much. For example – when was the last time you had a really good Internet connection at a hotel? The majority of hotels give you internet access, but I think, on average, the dial-up modems of yesterday were faster. In the last five hotels I’ve been too, all had Internet connections, but only one of those five had an acceptable, workable, consistent connection. It’s sad. 3G networks are not much better. In fact the variance there is even more drastic.

Our customers (the decision makers at least) are nomadic. They travel from one hotel to another, from one Starbucks to another, and from one client to another. These fragile networks affect them in a big way.

Traditionally, if you’re building a *native* multi-user app, you’d use the classic client-server architecture. This doesn’t work well on fragile networks. Nowadays, it’s all about web apps. But guess what? Those are equally terrible on fragile networks. And contrary to popular belief, even with all these newfangled video conference capabilities, business travel for executives is on the rise. Mobility is on the rise.

To solve this issue, we’ve leveraged our acclaimed 4th generation offline sync technology and combined it with our Apple Design Award winning Billings 3 interface to make Billings Pro. We think it’s the best system of its kind. Not only is this great for business travelers, it’s equally great for people that move about in a city or move about just to get the creative juices flowing.

And just to make sure we’ve covered the true road warrior, we have a feature rich, native iPhone application based on the award winning Billings Touch. Tracking time, mileage, expenses, and collecting payments on the road has never been easier. Billings Pro Touch uses our proven mobile synchronization technology over EDGE, 3G and WiFi. We submitted Billings Pro Touch to the App Store for approval last week. We hope it’ll be approved soon.

Along with this, we noticed that collecting billable time from staff was a real difficulty for our potential customers. These workers use a variety of operating systems so we built a simple and intuitive web-based app called Timecard for tracking time, mileage and expenses. We’ve purposely kept this app very simple. There is no financial data in it, no complex choices, so the learning curve is shallow. The same app works both in modern desktop browsers (Safari, Chrome, Firefox) and in modern mobile browsers (Safari, Android, BlackBerry OS 6 (Torch)). IE 8 support will come in an update.

Now you may think you need to get a networking expert to setup the Billings Pro system. Not so. We’ve built another phenomenal system called “Switchboard”. It facilitates networking if you have compliant hardware. You create a switchboard account during setup and then use that switchboard account name along with your Billings Pro credentials and automatically Billings Pro Mac, Billings Pro Touch and Timecard will find your server if it is reachable. Switchboard automatically handles things like your IP address changing.

For version 1, you get all of this for a one-time fee of US $199.95 per user. No monthlies, no yearlies. You can upgrade from Billings 3 for US $174.95 per user. For temporary users, we have a monthly per user “pay as you go” option for US $24.95 as well. Prices vary slightly in some regions.

You can try the entire Billings Pro system with no limitations for free for 30 days.

Finally, I’d like to thank the Marketcircle team and the beta testers. Birthing a new product takes a tremendous amount of energy. It’s not easy but they came through with flying colours.

So without further ado, check out Billings Pro.

Here is the official press release.

Until next time…
AJ

Daylite Touch 1.5 with Reminders Released

August 6, 2010 on 6:28 am | AJ

I’ve been using Daylite Touch 1.5 with alarms for a while now and I can’t live without it! The alarms provide an additional sense of freedom.

We’ve been lobbying Apple since Day 1 of the iPhone SDK availability (specifically March 6th 2008) for this capability and we finally got it in iOS 4.

As you can imagine, we re-prioritized a bunch of things so we could make this happen asap. We needed to work on all 3 parts of the system (Daylite, Daylite Server and Daylite Touch) which is why you must have Daylite 3.11 and Daylite Server 3.11.

So while the feature may appear small, it was a lot of work to get it right. In the process, I became addicted to the automatic alarm feature (i.e. remind me 5 minutes before any scheduled event or accepted meeting).

Daylite Touch 1.5 also has some other iOS 4 goodness – including support for multi-tasking and Apple’s awesome new retina display.

So go ahead and download Daylite Touch 1.5 from the App Store.

Remember, make sure you have Daylite 3.11 and Daylite Server 3.11 (which we released two weeks ago).

Until next time…
AJ

Daylite 3.11 Released, Localized in German

July 27, 2010 on 9:34 am | Ryan

Along with support for the local alarms feature in Daylite Touch 1.5, we’ve worked hard with our German partners OSXpert to bring full German localization to Daylite, DMI and Daylite Server.

Daylite in German is only available for download from the OSXpert website.

You can download Daylite 3.11 here, and Daylite Server 3.11 from here.

Daylite Touch has been available in German for a while now.

*Daylite Touch 1.5 will be released shortly and requires Daylite 3.11*

As you can imagine, localizing a massive app like Daylite is a huge amount of work. We’ve been working on it for a while now and I think our German customers are going to be very happy.

Here are a few screenshots showing off Daylite localized in German:

Daylite 3.11 also includes integration with Fujitsu ScanSnap scanners. ScanSnap integration allows you to scan documents to your Mac, and then easily link them to projects, contacts, sales opportunities, and more.

Scanned documents are stored as chronological history under the relevant object in Daylite, making it fast and easy to access them when needed (compatible with S1300 and 1500M models only).

Click here to download the ScanSnap plugin.

We also have two videos showing the ScanSnap integration, one for single users, and one for multi-users.

Daylite 3.11 also features some bug fixes and enhancements – for a full list of release notes, check out this KB article.
