I have an Airport (wireless) network and no server, how do I share my databases?
You have to designate one computer as the 'master'. It can be a laptop, but we strongly recommend that you use a stationary desktop such as an eMac or iMac or PowerMac.
Normally,
you would need a static IP address, but an Airport network works on a
dynamic IP address basis. We can simulate a static IP on an Airport
network with the following steps.
The steps that follow
assume a closed/private network. It is not meant to be used with a
public access base station. Also, it is best to get a network savvy
person (such a Marketcircle Consulting Partner) to do this for you.
- Launch Apple's Airport Admin Utility
- Connect to your base station (read the Airport Admin Utility documentation if you need help here)
- Click on the 'Show All Settings' button
- Click on the 'Network' tab
- Here is the important part - set the DHCP lease to 999 Days
- Shut down all other computers (except the one you are currently using)
- Update the base station and restart it if necessary
- Boot the computer that is going to act as the 'master' (or as the 'server')
- Now that your network is setup, follow the networking setup instructions
If
the IP address of the 'server' changes, you will need to update the
Access Configuration settings on the 'server' and the connection info
on the 'clients'.
