How can I setup Billings Pro for Remote Access?

Requirements

You have installed Billings Pro Server on a stationary computer (e.g. iMac or MacMini with a static private IP address).

You have chosen to use a Static Public IP address or Dynamic DNS Domain name service such as Dyn.com or No-IP.

  • If you are unsure what a Dynamic DNS Domain Name or Static IP address is, or need to know which is best for you check out Dynamic IP vs Static IP.
  • This article will help you to identify your server computer’s private IP address. How to find your IP address on a Mac. For assigning the server with a static private IP address contact your router manufacturer or consult their documentation.

How-to Specify Your Network Settings

You will have to unlock Billings Pro Server Admin to make these changes. To do this, click the lock button and authenticate with a Mac OS X administrator credentials.

  1. Working from the Network pane in Billings Pro Server Admin, click Advanced.
  2. In the Public Address field, enter your static IP address or domain name. Click Save to confirm your settings.

NOTE: If you are unable to edit the Public Address, you will need to first log out of your Switchboard Account located on the Network pane.

Determine how you want to open your ports

Manual Port Forwarding - Preferred
  1. On your router, open the TCP ports (7113, 7116, 7117 and 7118) and forward these ports to the internal server IP address of your server machine.

Router Managed Port Forwarding - uPnP or NAT/PMP routers only
  1. Working from the Network pane in Billings Pro Server Admin, click Advanced...
  2. Check the 'Enable automatic port forwarding' box.

For more information on uPnP or NAT/PMP check out NAT Port Mapping Protocol. If you are unsure if your router supports uPnP or NAT/PMP consult your router documentation or choose Manual Port Forwarding which is our preferred option.

Connecting to the database from Billings Pro remotely

Once you have configured the server for Internet access, you can follow the steps below to login into Billings Pro remotely.

Billings Pro for Mac

  1. Launch Billings Pro.
  2. Click on the drop-down menu Company ID select 'Advanced Setup'.
  3. In the 'Server Address' field, enter your static public IP address or Dynamic DNS Domain name that you have setup.
  4. Enter your Worker Name and Password. (remember all fields are space and case sensitive).
  5. Click on 'Log In'.

Billings Pro for iOS

  1. Launch Billings Pro.
  2. Tap 'Log In'.
  3. Tap 'Advanced Setup'.
  4. Tap 'Remote Server'.
  5. In the 'Host Name' field, enter your static public IP address or Dynamic DNS Domain name.
  6. Enter your Worker Name and Password. (remember all fields are space and case sensitive).
  7. Tap "Log In".

VPN Users Only

If you connect through a VPN to your Office’s network do not open any ports. Instead, working from the Network Pane use the servers Local IP address as the Local address.
