I cannot launch Billings Pro Server Admin due to a "Connecting to the Billings Pro configuration" error.

Symptom

When you launch Billings Pro Server Admin, the application does not open. Instead, you see a spinning wheel displaying "Connecting to the Billings Pro configuration."

Why is this problem occurring

This issue can occur due to many reasons which are listed below. Follow the steps in order to isolate and resolve the most common causes of this error.

1. The issue is occurring after a recent OS X update

You have recently upgraded your operating system (for example: from Mac OS X 10.10.x (Yosemite) to Mac OS X 10.11.x (El Capitan).

Potential Solution

  1. Restart the computer.
  2. Re-install the latest build of Billings Pro Server Admin.
  3. Double-click the dmg and run the installer.
  4. When done, click Close.

2. There may be a stuck process

This issue could be caused by a required Billings Pro process that may be in a 'stuck' state on your server machine.

Potential Solution

Here are the steps to determine if this could be the case:

  1. Restart your server machine in Safe Mode by following the steps in this article.
  2. Re-install the latest build of Billings Pro Server Admin.
  3. Launch Billings Pro Server Admin, and switch the server 'OFF' using the toggle switch.
  4. Restart your server computer normally, and launch Billings Pro Server Admin again.
  5. Then switch the server 'ON' using the toggle switch.

3. The Mac Firewall on your server machine may be blocking access.

If your Mac Firewall is enabled, there are a number of required processes that must be allowed to enable local and remote access to your server.

Potential Solution

To help confirm if your Mac Firewall could be related, try to switch the Firewall on your Mac completely off. You can access your firewall options by visiting System Preferences --> Security & Privacy --> Firewall

If your firewall is 'ON', switch it off completely and try to launch Billings Pro Server Admin again.

Note: In all of the above cases, make sure that you are logging into a Mac OS X user account that has administrator privileges.
